For many, it has been a challenging year. As economic and global uncertainties leave many of us feeling isolated, tabletop gaming emerges not merely as an escape, but as a powerful connector—a medium through which we can forge real bonds, create shared experiences, and find solace together. In this way, tabletop gaming has become an island in a sea of uncertainty—one reliable activity that brings us together when so much is trying to tear us apart.
On an individual level, we certainly enjoy and engage with the safe harbor that tabletop gaming offers. Tabletop gaming facilitates connection in exciting new ways—whether revitalizing classroom discussions, providing new ways to explore complex ideas, or simply connecting people with a shared love of play. The benefits of tabletop gaming are only growing, and we believe these experiences are as valuable in the classroom as they are on the gaming table. To that end, we are excited to share with you the finished articles from Volume II of Board Game Academics.
During our second conference in July of 2024, we were excited to hear from academics around the globe, including Lancaster University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Calgary, and SUNY Oswego, as well as professionals actively engaging with tabletop gaming in practical applications. The articles being published today reflect this broader view of what tabletop gaming can be in a world of uncertainty. In one article, the author explores how integrating game mechanics into undergraduate philosophy classes not only sparks critical thinking but also revitalizes student engagement. Another study highlights the mechanisms through which tabletop simulations can be structured to help students navigate complex historical narratives in new and engaging ways.
As you read through the work of academic and practical professionals across different disciplines, we invite you to join the conversation. Whether you have a story about how gaming has transformed your life or insights on building more inclusive spaces, we welcome your contributions for future volumes. Whether you share that story next year or in our Victory Points column, your experiences are the heartbeat of this community and gaming will continue to play an important role for all of us.
